Meg is a 6 year cross bred who has been having increasing problems with stiffness after rest and looking very sore when getting out her basket. Her owners feel she looks like a 13 year old dog , not a 6 year old dog that should be in her prime. Meg has osteoarthritis in both hips caused by hip dysplasia.
Hip replacement is a very good salvage surgery for many patients but decision making is not straightforward and advice from a Recognised Specialist in the area should be sought whenever possible. We go into this in more detail in video 10 of the Arthritis HELP series. Proper non-surgical management must also be explored before any decision for surgery and we discuss this in detail in Video 7.
